Rancho Cucamonga: Thomas Vineyards

Thomas Vineyards in Rancho Cucamonga, California, is a cornerstone of the region’s long-standing winemaking tradition. Dating back to the 19th century, Rancho Cucamonga was once one of the largest wine-producing areas in the U.S., and Thomas Vineyards played a role in preserving this rich history. The vineyard is known for its Zinfandel grapes, a variety that has flourished in the area’s favorable climate and soil conditions.

Nearby, visitors can explore the Virginia Dare Winery site, one of the earliest and most famous wineries in the area. The Virginia Dare brand became synonymous with Rancho Cucamonga’s wine reputation in the early 20th century. While the original winery no longer exists, the site remains an important part of California’s wine legacy and provides a glimpse into the region’s historical significance in the wine industry. Located at the site are many shops to include Coffee Klatch. Also in the vicinity are the D’ Elenna  Winery and the Galleano Winery, both of which contribute to the region’s rich winemaking heritage. Also Is Biane Winery that was established in 1932 but recently reopened to the public. As a mini wine tour, you can visit locally  D’ Elenna Winery, Galleano Winery, Biane and San Antonio Winery tasting room and enjoy various varietals to include local Zinfandel wines. Together these wineries make up the most part of Cucamonga wine country.

OTHER NEARBY SIGNIFICANT SITES:

Another significant attraction just west of Thomas Vinyards is the Route 66 Trailhead Park. This is a tribute to route 66 and Pacific Electric Rail which was a rail that went from LA to San Bernardino which is now a bike trail. There is a commemorative route 66 bridge that goes over Foothill Blvd which is a 60 mile stretch of road that overlays what was once part of route 66. The bridge honors route 66. East of the Thomas Vinyards nearby is the Cucamonga Service Station, a vintage structure that harkens back to the mid-20th century, reflecting the era’s automobile culture that shaped much of Southern California. This historic gas station complements the wine heritage of the region. Together, these excursions paint a picture of Rancho Cucamonga’s agricultural and industrial past, making the Cucamonga Valley region a fascinating destination for history and wine enthusiasts alike.
