Mel’s Diner

Mel’s Drive-In in Santa Monica, California, holds a unique place in both Route 66 and Hollywood history. Located on the corner of Lincoln and Olympic, this site marks the official “End of the Road” for Route 66. Formerly home to the Penguin restaurant, which closed years prior, Mel’s took over the space in 2018. The diner, made famous in American Graffiti, has become a must-stop for Route 66 travelers, providing a commemorative experience that includes certificates and recognition for completing the legendary route.

One of the standout features of this location is the Route 66-themed fish tank built by the famed TV show Tanked. The tank vividly illustrates the journey from Chicago to Santa Monica, adding to the nostalgic and celebratory atmosphere of the diner. Outside, visitors are greeted by the “End of the Route” sign, mirroring the start of Route 66 in Chicago, making it a perfect place for road-trippers to celebrate the end of their adventure.
